A criminal conviction does not always mean that a person's criminal record will be permanently damaged. Options for cleansing of one's record include expungement and pardons. An expungement or pardon may allow someone with a criminal record to have a fresh start, and prevent problems with employment, housing, firearm possession, passport issuance, and other areas of life that may be affected after a drunk driving or drug offense.

Expungement options - summary offense.

House Bill 1543 was signed by Governor Rendell on December 3, 2008 effective February 2009!  HB 1543 amends the existing expungement statute to allow a petition for expungement for any summary offense after the person has been free of arrest for five years following the summary conviction!  This is brand new legislation that allows the removal of summary convictions.

Expungement options - ARD, Section 17, juvenile, non-convictions.

Mark F. Walmer of Timoney Knox, LLP, in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, can petition the court for expungement if the previous charges have been resolved by admission to the ARD program, or if the client received a Section 17 disposition or if you have been convicted of a summary offense.  Additionally, juvenile offenses and charges that have been withdrawn, nolle-prossed or dismissed may be eligible for removal from one's record.

Pardon option - removal of multiple charges, if approved by Board of Pardons.

Otherwise, to cleanse other charges from a person's record, it may be necessary to apply to the Board of Pardons and Parole to have the conviction 'pardoned', or undone.  Whether the Board will grant  a Pardon is based on the nature of the charges, the impact on the victim, how long ago they were, what the defendant has been doing with their life since then, and what complications are being caused by the conviction.
